Dental Care for Your Growing Child

As soon as your baby enters the world, you begin the task of caring for your little one. As a parent, you want to keep your child safe and healthy. Part of this job includes looking out for your child’s dental health. From infancy until late teens, you need to take steps to ensure that your kids have strong, beautiful smiles.

Infants and Toddlers

Although your baby may not get a first tooth until about six months, start oral hygiene habits now. Wipe gums with a soft cloth every day to remove germs. During teething, offer your baby cold washcloths and teething rings to help with the discomfort. Once teeth erupt, brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush, but don’t use fluoride toothpaste on children under age two. You should schedule a first dental visit by the time your child turns three.

School-age children

By this point, most children can brush by themselves, but you may need to inspect their efforts. Make sure to have your kids get into the habit off flossing every day. Regular checkups are recommended every six months so that the dentist can evaluate your child’s development and look for any issues, such as cavities.

Tweens

During this time, your child may end up beginning orthodontic treatment. Remind your child to keep up with brushing and flossing because oral hygiene can be more difficult with braces. If your child has a retainer, make sure he or she wears it as directed and stores it in a safe place.

Teenagers

Because of their active schedules and questionable dietary choices, teens can be at risk for cavities and other problems. Provide healthy snack options and offer reminders about home care routines. Teens who participate in sports activities should wear a mouth guard to prevent facial and oral injuries.
