Why is My Tooth Loose?

Unless you are a young child awaiting a visit from the tooth fairy, most people don’t get very excited when they discover they have a loose tooth. Adults who have loose teeth likely have dental issues that are concerning and require a dentist’s care. Let’s learn what causes loose teeth in adults.

Childhood mistakes
Most children begin losing their baby teeth around age five, and continue through the early stages of puberty. Some parents don’t focus on teaching good hygiene techniques, avoiding sugary snacks, or providing calcium for healthy teeth because they mistakenly believe that it doesn’t matter at that age. It is wrong, however, to think that these things don’t matter simply because the primary teeth will be lost. Poor dental care can cause childhood cavities, and increased dental problems at a young age can eventually lead to tooth loss as an adult.

Decay
Untreated tooth decay can cause tooth loss. Once decay leads to a cavity, which then weakens the tooth all the way to its root, infection is a likely result. Gum disease may also occur. Tooth loss is another consequence of the late stages of untreated decay. It is important to seek professional treatment at the onset of tooth decay to avoid severe outcomes.

Poor dental hygiene
Adult tooth loss usually begins with improper dental hygiene. If teeth and gums are not cared for appropriately, the intervention of a dentist may be the only way to either save the teeth before losing them, or provide remedies for restoring your smile after tooth loss has occurred.
