Most people understand oral hygiene basics. Everyone knows to brush twice a day and floss often. While knowing how to care for your teeth and gums is important, dentistry doesn’t have to be boring. The following facts are less common, but they just might make you smile:

•    In China, September 20th is an official holiday known as “Love Your Teeth Day.”
•    Lucy Hobbs was the first women in the United States to earn a dental degree. She graduated from Ohio College of Dental Surgery in 1866.
•    During the Middle Ages, there was a German practice of kissing a donkey to cure tooth pain.
•    More people choose blue toothbrushes than red ones.
•    Over your lifetime, an individual can produce more than 10,000 gallons of saliva.
•    The hardest tissue in the body is the enamel covering our teeth.
•    Dental plaque contains more than three hundred species of bacteria.
•    An elephant molar weights approximately 8.8 pounds.
•    Famous for warning Americans that the British were coming, Paul Revere worked as a silversmith, engraver, and dentist.
•    Giraffes only have bottom teeth.
•    George Washington’s dentures were constructed from walrus, cow, elephant, and hippopotamus teeth.
•    Artist Leonardo D Vinci was the first person to render an accurate drawing of the human skull and teeth, though he had no dental background.
•    When a crocodile loses a tooth, another one comes in to replace it.
•    At one time, toothbrush bristles were made from cow hair.
